FINRA Offering Senior Investors Free Resources
Ever since President Ronald Reagan designated August 21 as Senior Citizen’s Day in 1988, communities and organizations have been honoring our seniors for their decades of contributing to our society, while also bringing awareness to issues affecting our country’s older citizens. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has put together three investor protection resources for senior citizens to use at any time of the year.
- FINRA Securities Helpline for SeniorsTM: FINRA launched this free service back in 2015 in order to give senior investors somewhere to get assistance and information related to questions or concerns they may have over their investments and brokerage accounts. FINRA understands that senior citizens may require help tailored to their specific needs and difficulties, including possible health complications, minimal outside income, and diminished mental capacity. The Helpline has helped almost 6,000 investors from all 50 states, as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico. The Helpline is open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday, and can be reached by calling 844-574-3577.
- FINRA BrokerCheck: This free service allows investors to find information on and the disciplinary history of any brokerage firm or broker registered with FINRA. 71 million firm and broker records were reviewed by investors in 2015 alone through this service. This is one of the services we use at Meyer Wilson when investigating claims against brokers and firms.
- Fighting Fraud: Whether or not you have been the target of a fraudster, chances are someone you know has been the target of an investment scam. These people tend to go after older citizens who are close to retirement or are already retired. Before you commit to buying stocks offered to you out of the blue, take a step back and do some research on the person or firm offering this “great” deal. Chances are something a bit shady may be going on, and that you should back away from the offer.
